ROMNEY, W.Va., Oct. 1, 2016 — Hampshire’s own Hannah Lipps and Southern Garrett harrier Declan Horner cruised to individual wins in the Buffalo Wild Wings Stampede. The two covered the 3.1-mile course at Hampshire High School in Romney better than anyone else on the day — despite the past three days worth of rain and mud.
Lipps, a junior, didn’t lead from the start this morning. That honor belonged to Rosie Chan, of Somerset Area. Lipps later said she didn’t worry about Chan’s quick burst to an early lead because, Lipps said, she knows her home course as good as anyone.
Lipps, the top-ranked Class AAA female cross country runner in the latest RunWV poll, in overtook Chan by about midway into the first mile and stopped the clock in 19 minutes, 54.8 seconds. Chan was second in 20:30.3.
Horner averaged 5:30 per mile and crossed the finish line in 17:06. Somerset Area’s Cejay Walker was second in 17:30.
The high school meet was the largest in school history as 16 teams and more than 350 runners were registered — not including middle school runners who ran earlier in the day.
